Mechanical service is condition-based

A traditional service involves disassembly, cleaning, inspection, lubrication, reassembly and adjustment. Whether that is the right answer depends on what the movement actually needs.

Wear and lubrication matter

A watch may still tick with degraded lubricant or worn components. Continuing to run does not prove that the movement is healthy.

Sometimes replacement is the better option

On some common, widely used movements, replacement can cost less and provide a more reliable result than rebuilding a badly damaged movement. If we recommend replacement, we say so clearly.

Older watches need restraint

Vintage watches may contain obsolete parts, previous repairs or original components that should not be replaced casually. Cosmetic work is never assumed.

What is a mechanical watch overhaul?

An overhaul is a complete movement service: the movement is disassembled, cleaned, inspected, lubricated, reassembled, adjusted and tested.

Does a mechanical watch need service if it still runs?

Not always. Poor accuracy, short power reserve, difficult winding, intermittent stopping or a long unknown service history can all justify inspection even when the watch still ticks.

Can a mechanical movement be replaced instead of serviced?

On some modern workhorse movements, replacement can be the more economical and reliable option. On vintage or collectible watches, preserving the original movement is usually more important.
